The History of the Melrose-Mercy Neighborhood in St. Petersburg, FL
Melrose-Mercy takes its name from two important institutions: The Melrose Clubhouse and Mercy Hospital. Both of these businesses were important centers for St. Petersburg’s African American community, particularly during segregation.
The Melrose Clubhouse was initially founded as the Clubhouse for the City Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs. It also served as the YMCA between 1945 and 1964 – specifically the branch that was accessible for black citizens. In 1993, the building was designated a historic landmark.
Mercy Hospital served as the only primary healthcare facility for black citizens of St. Petersburg for more than forty years. From 1923 to 1966, the hospital served not only as a medical facility but also as the center of protests against segregation in the healthcare industry in St. Petersburg. It was declared a historic place in 1994.
These two historic landmarks define the Melrose-Mercy neighborhood. Once a center of African American culture in St. Petersburg, today, the neighborhood is a thriving community with convenient access to a variety of museums, churches, and historic attractions.
If you enjoy visiting museums, be sure to check out the Florida Holocaust Museum, the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, each located just east of Melrose-Mercy. You may also want to take the kids to the Great Explorations Children’s Museum. Take in some of St. Petersburg’s natural beauty at the Sunken Gardens, Vinoy Park, or St. Pete Pier.
The Pinellas County Clerk of Court is located just northeast of Melrose-Mercy, as is the Pinellas County Juvenile Court.

If you’ve been hurt in one of those accidents, Lopez will stand up to the insurance giants and the trucking companies to get you the compensation you’re owed.
Wrongful Death
No amount of money can bring back your loved one after a wrongful death, but a fair settlement can help you cover some of their final expenses. If you’ve lost a loved one, our personal injury lawyers can help you get justice and a fair settlement offer.
Damages Available in Melrose-Mercy Personal Injury Cases
There are three basic types of compensation you can get in a Melrose-Mercy personal injury case.
Economic damages pay you back for losses that carry an inherent financial value. Examples can include lost wages, loss of future earning potential, medical expenses, property damage, and so on.
Non-economic damages compensate you for losses that don’t come with a specific price tag. You may get non-economic damages for emotional trauma, mental anguish, pain and suffering, scarring and disfigurement, loss of companionship, loss of enjoyment, and more.
Punitive damages are a method of punishing a defendant who acted in a particularly awful way during the course of an accident. These damages are very rare to recover in personal injury cases since they come with a high burden of proof.
What Does It Cost to Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in Pinellas County?
Often, personal injury victims find themselves facing a terrible financial burden after their accident. They may have a mounting pile of medical bills, and often, victims can’t work while they recover from their wounds – if they can ever return to work again. Spending money on a lawyer to help in their case may be completely out of the question.
The good news is that most personal injury lawyers are dedicated to making sure that their clients can get justice without taking on more of a financial burden. Personal injury attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they take their fee from a portion of the money they recover in your case. If they don’t recover any money for you, you may not have to pay them a dime.
Statute of Limitations in Florida Personal Injury Cases
Florida gives most accident victims two years to file a personal injury claim based on negligence. However, you may have more or less time depending on the facts of your case. For example, Injury claims not based on negligence typically have a four-year deadline. Claims against government entities typically require a notice of claim within months of the accident.
