The History of the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood in St. Petersburg, FL

Historic Kenwood got its start in 1912 when a Philadelphia developer named Charles Hall bought 160 acres of avocado groves in St. Petersburg, Florida. Hall quickly began selling and developing the lots in the neighborhood, creating a thriving community with easy access to downtown. In fact, this neighborhood was the first in St. Pete to be home to year-round residents, rather than snowbirds.

In 1926, St. Petersburg built the nation’s first million-dollar high school in Historic Kenwood. Over the next thirty years, the neighborhood grew and expanded, but by the 1950s, residents were moving into newer neighborhoods, and Historic Kenwood fell into disrepair.

In the 1990s, revitalization efforts were launched in Historic Kenwood, and the neighborhood began to come back to life. Today, Historic Kenwood is a thriving community with a fantastic art presence and a rich history. It remains home to St. Petersburg High School and to Seminole Park. More Than the Physical art studio is in the heart of Historic Kenwood, as is the St. Pete Pride headquarters. If you’re lost for things to do, check out the Grand Central District Association, which helps to manage one of St. Pete’s most thriving commercial districts!

The St. Petersburg Judicial Building and Pinellas County Clerk of Court are both located just to the east of Historic Kenwood.

Damages Available in Historic Kenwood Personal Injury Cases

There are three basic types of damages you may be entitled to after a personal injury: economic, non-economic, and punitive.

  • Economic damages – These damages are meant to cover losses that have a specific financial value. Examples include medical bills, lost wages, loss of future earning potential, property damage, and more.
  • Non-economic damages – These damages help to compensate you for losses that don’t have an inherent monetary value. You may get non-economic damages for pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional trauma, scarring and disfigurement, loss of companionship, loss of enjoyment of life, and so on.
  • Punitive damages – These damages are extraordinarily rare to recover in a personal injury case. They are meant to punish a defendant who acted in an especially awful manner during the course of an accident.

Your St. Petersburg personal injury lawyer can help you calculate every type of damages you’re owed and negotiate to get you a full and fair settlement.

What Does It Cost to Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in Pinellas County?

One of the biggest concerns for accident victims is how much it may cost them to hire a personal injury lawyer. After all, many victims are unable to work while they heal from their injuries, and they often wind up with a stack of medical bills they have no way to pay. Adding on lawyers’ fees may not be an option for most accident victims.

At Lopez, our attorneys understand this, and that’s why we always work on a contingency fee basis. Instead of charging up-front fees, we take our fees out of a portion of the money we recover in your case. If we don’t get a settlement for you, you won’t have to pay us a dime.

Statute of Limitations in Florida Personal Injury Cases

There’s a limited amount of time after an accident that you can file a personal injury claim. You can’t wake up one day and decide you’d like to seek compensation for an accident that happened twenty years ago. This time limit is called the statute of limitations, and once it’s passed, you won’t be able to get your case heard in a court of law.

In Florida, the statute of limitations for most personal injury cases is two years. This means you’ll have two years from the date of your accident to file a claim.

You used to have four years to pursue negligence-based claims in Florida. However, the law was revised on March 24, 2023, cutting the deadline in half. Therefore, if your Historic Kenwood accident or personal injury occurred after that date, you’ll need to take action within two years.

Two years may seem like a long time, but it can go by faster than you realize when you’re healing from injuries and trying to get your life back on track. It’s best to get in touch with a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible after your accident to begin work on your case.
